Reverse osmosisĀ (RO) is a water purification technology that uses a semipermeable membrane to remove ions, molecules and larger particles from drinking water. ... The result is that the solute is retained on the pressurized side of the membrane and the pure solvent is allowed to pass to the other side.

  • Explain the terms osmosis and reverse osmosis.

Answer

Osmosis

The process of flow of the solvent molecules from pure solvent to the solution through a semi permeable membrane is called osmosis

Reverse osmosis

The direction of osmosis can be reversed if a pressure larger than the osmotic presssure is applied to the solution side .then the pure solvent flows from the solution side to the solvent side through a semi permeable membrane is called reverse osmosis
