The theme of the novel is racial prejudices and the importance of education.
- E.R Braithwaite got a job as a teacher. His students were reluctant towards education and did not understand its importance.
- But with his great teaching skills and creative idea, he understood his student's psychology and managed to establish a good teacher-student relationship with his students.
- The novel also throws light on the racism prevalent in Great Britain. The author shares his experiences on the bus, during the interview, and in a restaurant.
