The Pressure Flow Hypothesis, also known as the Mass Flow Hypothesis, is the best-supported theory to explain the movement of sap through the phloem. It was proposed by Ernst Munch, a German plant physiologist in 1930. ... Movement of phloem sap occurs by bulk flow (mass flow) from sugar sources to sugar sinks.

Theory of mass flow:

  • Mass flow theory defines the nature of movement of the contents of phloem. It was proposed by German scientist Earnst Munch in 1930.
  • He said that at first, the productions of photosynthesis, mainly glucose is transferred into phloem by means of active transport. This leads to a high concentration of sugar in phloem which draws water from adjacent xylem by means of osmosis.
  • This leads to a high fluid content of phloem, which actually pushes the content from its source to its sink. This explains why unlike xylem, the contents of phloem movement are bidirectional.
