In the France society, there were three estates :
i) 1st estate : Clergy, priests, etc.
ii) 2nd estate : King, noblemen, etc.
iii) 3rd estate : Common people (peasants, merchants, lawyers, businessmen, servants, etc.)
The first and second estates were exempted from paying any kind of taxes but the third estate had pay taxes to both the first and second estates like tithe, taille, fuedal tax, etc.
