Type of elections in India
India is world’s largest constitutional democracy. Our constitution has given rights to the people, to elect their representatives and appoint them to handle administrative decisions as the members of government bodies.
All Indian citizens participate in three types of elections:
The central government general elections, held to elect members for LOK SABHA, i.e. the lower house of the parliament, which includes our prime minister and the whole cabinet. These elected members are popularly known as the MPs. This election is held every five years. The state government elections, held to elect members of legislative assembly orVIDHAN SABHA of each state. These members are also called the MLAs. This election is also organized every five years. The elections held for respective gram panchayat/ nagar panchayat/ nagar palika / mahanagar palika through which people elect their local level leaders who take decisions at those respective levels.
