Answers
“The Stalled Ox” was written by Saki. The Character, Theophil Eshley was an artist by profession. His paintings of cows were appreciated by everyone. He was recognized for his paintings that exhibited cows with nature as its backdrop.
Now one would wonder why an artist who is recognized for his work paint only cows when a painter could make a variety of pictures, as a painter never has dearth for imaginations. His choice of paintings based on cowswas not by choice but driven by his environment.
When I say environment, it does not mean he lived in a house full of cows and they ran a dairy farm. He lived in apark-like villa. In his neighborhood, there was a small beautiful meadowwhere cows pastured.
Initially, the painter was drawn towards the picturesque nature of the cowsgrazing under the walnut tree. He drew the picture of the cows in the shade of the walnut trees grazing in the meadow grass, and the sunlight on them. His expression on the canvas came out so well that everyone soon asked the artist more such pictures with cows grazing with his imagination.
Royal Academy recognized the artist wok and thus was born different pictures of the cows and he named them “Noontide Peace”, “A Midday Sanctuary" “The Haven of the Herd"to name a few.
One day his neighbor Adela Pingsfordcame rushing to the artist's home, asking him to drive away an ox that had entered her garden. The artist told his neighbor that he had absolutely no clue as to how to drive the ox. His neighbor was very angry nonetheless.
Theophil Eshley thought it would not be nice of him if he did not help her. So he went to the garden hoping to drive the ox with some “shoo” “ hush” sounds, but the ox ran into the house and was destroying her plants kept for decoration. This angered his neighbor more and she yelled at the artist saying that you can only paint pretty cows and nothing else, perhaps you should try painting this too.
This made the artist start painting the scene and he named it “ox in a morning room late afternoon”. This became a sensation and it was bought by the Bavarian Government. As the ox had bit the cover of the book “Israel Kalisch”, and he gave some flowers for reconciliation but his neighbor Adela did not reconcile at all.
To end the summary, we can say the story made good and interesting reading and it had subtle humor too.
