The vegetation cover is sparse, with red grasses growing in the bush velds and acacia and maroola growing in the high velds.

The veld is located on a plateau descending in a series of steps. The highest part is known as high veld. Its elevation ranges between 1200 m to 1800 m. A ridge called witwatersrand runs through the centre of the high veld. The middle veld ranges in height from 600 m to 1200 m and below it lies the Low veld which ranges from 150m to 600m. The Limpopo, the Sabi, the Orange and its tributary, the vaal, are some of the rivers that drain the veld region. Waterfalls and rapids have formed where the rivers drop down the plateau edges.
