Answer :

\bigstar In a chemical synapse, there is a fluid-filled space, called synaptic cleft, between the presynaptic membrane (membrane of the axon terminal) and post synaptic membrane (membrane of the dendron/dendrite).

\bigstar When an impulse reaches the synaptic knob (of axon terminal) it stimulates the synaptic vesicles to move towards the terminal membrane and fuse with it and release the neurotransmitter into the synaptic cleft.

\bigstar The neurotransmitter diffuses across the synaptic cleft and binds to specific receptors present on the post-synaptic membrane.

\bigstar This binding opens the ion-channels of the membrane and entry of ions generates a new action potential in the post-synaptic membrane; it is conducted along the neuron.
