AJIT KUMAR BISHNOI explains why he looks up to APJ Abdul Kalam
I have chosen Dr Abdul Kalam as a role model. This may be a little surprising coming from me, who is a spiritual writer, because Dr Kalam was a scientist, who had political ambitions. Dr Kalam got a chance to become President of India in 2002 and served till 2007. He was keen on another term as President but this was not possible for various reasons. I am not shy to admit that Dr Kalam’s academic background has a lot of attraction for me, because I am myself a practicing engineer. Of course, Dr Kalam was a scientist par excellence to the extent that he was popularly tagged as the ‘Missile Man of India’.
Before I disclose what really attracted me to Dr Kalam, let me give a brief description of his very fruitful life. He started literally at the bottom of the ladder. His parents were not well off. Dr Kalam had to take up odd jobs to contribute to his family’s income, including distributing newspapers. But he never lost sight of getting properly educated. He graduated from Saint Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli in MIT, Tamil Nadu.
After graduating from there, he took up a position of chief scientist at the DRDO. Subsequently, he shifted to ISRO where he became the project director of India’s first indigenous satellite launch vehicle. His years at the ISRO were the most crucial ones; he successfully led many important projects.
Now I am ready to discuss why Dr Kalam is such a good role model. Surely, he must have faults like all of us, but his good qualities stand out. Needless to say, he excellent in his chosen fields. He was the Chief Executive of the 16.MDP, which researched simultaneous development of a quiver of missiles instead of taking planned missiles one by one. From all that I have learnt about him, he had great internal purity. His being a practising Muslim must have helped him in this regard.
He certainly did have positive attitude, otherwise he would never have ventured in fields which were at the nascent stage in India when he started. The Pokhran II nuclear tests were conducted when Dr Kalam was the Chief Project Coordinator. Dr Kalam was prepared to face hardships as was amply proved by the way he supported his family’s income in his childhood. He had a spotless character, which is an essential quality for a role model. His behaviour was also standard, amply shown throughout his life.
Before I go into further qualities a role model should have, I must mention that Dr Kalam had an open mind and he was well versed with Hindu traditions. And, lastly, what really attracted me to Dr Kalam was the fact that he had read the Bhagavad Gita. A role model should be able to control his or her mind. (Gita 6.35) He or she must adhere to truth and, most essentially, dharma. He or she should practice making sacrifices for others. He or she must engage his or her sense organs in doing good to others. (3.7) He or she should also not be attached to results. (3.7) And, lastly, he or she must be connected to God, which Dr Kalam was.
What are some of the benefits of being a role modelIJ Others get inspiration to act properly. (3.21) I am sure many budding scientists in India are dreaming to follow the path Dr Kalam traversed. One gets enormous satisfaction by being a role model. One will feel inspired to continue to do good work. People connected with such a person are benefited greatly. One gets a lot of respect. One feels a sense of achievement, which Dr Kalam must have felt. One is able to lead, like Dr Kalam did. One will become distant from sinful activities. One will attract good people to oneself. And one will be empowered by God. I do not know how good a role model I have become, but one benefit I have definitely derived is that I am empowered by God to write.
