(1) The year 1789 witnessed a severe winter which resulted into the bad harvest. (b) As a result of this prices of bread increased terribly. (3) In such a situation, shopkeepers hoarded the stock to sell the bread at even higher price. (3) Even after waiting for long in queues at the bakery, angry women broke open shops and started looking the bread and violence became common on the streets of Paris. (4) So, the king ordered the troop to move in the city to bring the situation to normalcy to which people reacted by storming the Bastille, the symbol of king’s power. (5) Rumors spread in rural areas that lords hired bands of brigands to destroy the ripe crops. Feared and enraged villagers attacked the manors of the lords with hoes and pitchforks. (6) Villagers looted the hoarded grains with the lords and burnt the documents related to the taxes. (7) Large number of nobles fled from their homes and many of them ran away to other countries. (8) All these factors forced the king to approve the National Assembly

  1. A severe winter had made a bad harvest, resulting in rising price of bread does, the situation was exploited by bakers and hoarded supplies. Angry woman stoned into the shops after standing for long hours in bakery queues.
  2. The army was ordered by the King to more into the city. There were rumours that army would be order to open fire upon the citizens. Thousands of agitated people gathered and decided to form a millettia.
  3. They broke into a number of government buildings in search of arms. They destroyed the prison of Bastille on 14th July 1789.
