The 2 nation theory was based on the belief that the Hindus and Muslims constituted 2 separate nations within India, and that political separation alone could solve theirproblems.

In 1933, a proposal was put forward for the creation of a separate Muslim nation called Pakstan. It was later changed to Pakistan.

The Congress opposed the 2 nation theory, as did many Muslim nationalists like Abul Kalam Azad, Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan, and Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
