Explain the types of plastids ? For class 9 biology fundamental unit of life
Answers
refer to the double membrane bound organelles found in plant cells. ... Plants make and store food in plastids. They have their own DNA and Ribosomes.
✺The term Plastids was given by Haeckal. They are spherical and discoidal in shape. These are double membranous and semi autonomous bodies because tehy have their own protein synthesising bodies (ribosomes) and contain their own DNA and RNA for which they are also known as Self-Replicating bodies. They have various names such as kitchen of the cell and many more...

✺On the basis of presence of pigments, The platids are classified into following types:
These are green coloured plastids containing chlorophyll, which helps in sunlight for photosynthesis.
These are yellow, red plastids conatining colour pigments called carotenoids. They are generally found in flower and fruits which helps in pollination.
They are colourless platids and often functions as storage organelle for storing starch ,proteins and lipids. They are too futher divided into 3 subgroups.
- Amyloplast(Stores Starch)
- Elaioplast(Stores oil)
- Aleuroplast(Stores proteins)

- Plastids (chloroplast) plays a vital role in the process of photosynthesis. They secret pigment called chlorophyll which traps the sunlight and then breakdown of raw materials takes place in the presence of sunlight to form organic substances/food of plant i.e Glucose.
- Chromoplast are coloured plastids that attarcts insects and birds for pollination.
- Leucoplast helps in the storage of starch, proteins and oils. They reserve food materials.
