The plastid is a major double membrane organelle found, among other, in the cells of plants and algae. Plastids are the site of manufacture and storage of important chemical compounds used by the cells.
There are four types of plastids :
chloroplast
chromoplast
gerontoplast
leucoplast
CHLOROPLAST are responsible for photosynthesis. It is filled with thylakoids.

CHROMOPLAST is a place for the pigments ti be stored and synthesized in the plant . These are found in flowering plants.

GERONTOPLASTS are basically chloroplast. Thes ate beginning to convert into different organelles.

LEUCOPLAST are non pigmented organelles. They have no colour at all .

Plastids are of three main types-
1. Leucoplasts are colourless and store food material in the form of starch.
2. Chromoplast are coloured containing pigment other than chlorophyll. These are yellow orange or red in colour and found in the colour parts of flowers and fruits.
3. Chloroplast are green plastid containing green pigment. It is the site of photosynthesis.
