3 types of seismic waves

primary or p waves

secondary or s waves

surface or l waves

1.primary waves are the first one to reach the earth's surface after the energy is emitted in the earth's interior. they travel at a very fast speed from the focus of the earthquake in radial direction. these waves move to and fro therefore they are called forward and backward waves .they travel through solid liquid and gaseous medium. while entering the liquid medium their direction gets changed .

2. the waves which reach the earth's surface after the primary waves they are called as secondary waves. they also get scattered in all directions from the focus of the earthquake. The particles lying in the way of these waves also move up and down in the direction of energy transfer. there are little slower than primary waves. they travel only through solid medium and get absorbed if they enter the liquid medium. they are more destructive than the p waves.

3. surface waves or l waves

they are generated after the main p and s waves reach the epicentre. they travel in the direction of the circumference of the earth and are highly destructive
