The unification of Italy

*During the mid 19th century, Italy was divided into 7 states of which only one, Sardinia -Piedmont, was ruled by an Italian princely house.

*The north was under the Austrian Habsburgs, the center was ruled by the Pope and the southern regions were dominated by the bourbon kings of Spain.
