Uses of Carbon

Carbon (in the form of coal, which is mainly carbon) is used as a fuel. Graphite is used for pencil tips, high temperature crucibles, dry cells, electrodes and as a lubricant. Diamonds are used in jewelry and – because they are so hard – in industry for cutting, drilling, grinding, and polishing.

Uses of carbon are:

1)Carbon in the form of graphite is used as pencil lead, lubricant. It is used for making electrodes and crucibles.

2)Carbon in the form of diamond is used in making jewellery as it sparkles brightly, as a tool for cutting glass and drilling rocks, in making high-precision thermometers.

3) Carbon in the form of coal is used as a fuel to cook food, to power steam engines and for generating electricity in thermal power plants.

4) Carbon in the form of coke is used in the extraction of metals like iron. In the form of coal gas is used as an important industrial fuel as it produces a lot of heat on burning. In the form of charcoal is used as a decolourising agent.
