Explain the uses of latitudes?

Answer:
Because our remarkable planet is a bit like a ball, way back in history our forebears determined that we needed a way to divide the ball up with lines of some sort so that people could get some idea of how far it would be to go from where they are to another place. Those lines we know as the parallel lines of latitude which stay the same distance apart but get shorter and shorter as the latitude increases north and south, and the lines of longitude, which get closer and closer together as latitude increases, but are a constant length.
Latitude used independently has limited value, since it may indicate some information of a slightly useful nature. Unless you are located at one of the geographic poles, it only indicates a line upon which you are located. Absent longitude, latitude is not very useful, but coupled with longitude someone knows exactly what your situation should be like, how to best reach you and what to do next. Magical!
