The transmission medium/media is of two types :—

1. Wired Transmission => The transmission medium which is connected through wires.

e.g. — (i) Twisted Pair Cable => It provides point to point connection between devices. There are 2 types of twisted pair cable —
(a) Unshielded twisted pair cable (UTP)
(b) Shielded twisted pair cable (STP)

(ii) Co-axial cable => It consists of one or more small cables. It's performence is better than twisted pair cable. It is like a TV cable wire.

(iii) Fibre Optic cable => These cables has a higher bandwidth than other cables. So it's transmission capacity is higher than that of other cables, it is also free of noise and interference. Thus it is the most expensive cable. Its transmission is based on the principle that we can use light to transmit/recieve information.

2. Wireless Transmission => The transmission medium which doesnot require any electrical conductor to transmit data/communication.

e.g. — (i) Radio Wave => Radio waves are type of electromagnetic radiation between two devices.

(ii) Micro wave => Micro waves are type of electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths to one meter to one mili meter.

(iii) Satellite => It uses radio waves to transmit data.

(iv) Infra-red Signals => When we transmit in a TV remote, we use infrared led to transmit with TV. Infrared is modulated.
