There are 5 main steps in the holozoic nutrition of animals:
1)Ingestion: The process of procuring food through various modes into the mouth like for humans it is hand and for elephants it is their trunks here the digestion takes place like the conversion of starch into sugar.
2)Digestion: The process of converting food into simpler forms which is easy to absorb is known as digestion it starts from mouth (amylase) like the conversion of starch into sugar, then in stomach which has gastric juice (pepsin) which converts proteins into simpler substances, then in small intestine with the helps of liver and pancreas proteins is converted into amino acids fats into fatty acids and glycerol and starch into sugar.
3)Absorption: The process in which the simplest form of food is absorbed by the blood, the villi (finger like projections) present on the ileum(inner part of the small intestine) helps in this absorption and thus giving it to the blood as they are connected with the blood vessels.
4)Assimilation: These absorbed nutrients undergoes cellular respiration in the mitochondria of the cell in the blood and produces energy, it is used to maintain the undergoing life processes and do our day to day activities.
5)Egestion: The removing of unwanted substances from the body in the form of faeces, The unwanted leftovers are sent to the large intestine to get the water absorbed and then through the anus out of the body.

:
Various aspects of obtaining food, mode of intake of food and its utilisation in the body for growth and development is known as nutrition.
Various steps of nutrition are as follows :
:
The act of getting and eating food collectively are called ingestion.
:
The breakdown of food into simpler and soluble molecules inside the body is called digestion.
:
The process by which soluble molecules present in the digested food passes into the body fluids like blood is called absorption.
:
The process in which the absorbed food is used for producing energy and growth is called assimilation.
:
The process by which the undigested food materials are thrown out of the body is called egestion.
