According to some academics, the name Gupta is derived from Goptri, meaning 'protector' or 'governor'.[1] According to historian R. C. Majumdar, the surname Guptawas adopted by several different communities in northern and eastern India at different times.[2] In modern north India, the surname Gupta is used mainly by the Vaishya Baniya communities, particularly those belonging to Varshney, Rauniyar, Agarwal (or gahoi), Mahur, Barnwal, Khandelwal, Jaiswal, Arya Vaishya, Mahajan, Mahawar, Maheshwari, Patwa, Kasuadhan, Sanmani, Lashkari and Mathur Vaishya sub-castes.[3] In eastern India, the Gupta surname is used by the Baidyacommunity of West Bengal and is often double-barrelled with other surnames like Sengupta, Dasgupta and Duttagupta.[
