Answer:

This article is about a great Indian Raja Ram Mohan Roy, whose contribution to the nation can't be forgotten ever. Despite many hurdles, he tried to improve the condition of our country in all aspect, be it social, economical or political. He worked for removing bad rituals in Hinduism, for opposing castism, empowering women etc. The base of Modern India is founded by him, so he is called "Father of Modern India".

Explanation:

Raja Ram Mohan Roy (22 MAY 1774 - 27 September 1833) is considered as the "Father of Modern India" because he remarkably influenced in the fields of politics, public administration and education as well as religion beliefs of India.

Raja Ram Mohan, a charismatic personality was born in RADHANAGAR, MURSHIDABAD, and BENGAL in an orthodox family.

His education involved learning different language like Sanskrit, Bengali, Arabic and Persian and study of secular texts as well as those concerned with the various religions of the world.

The period in which the Raja Ram Mohan Roy was born and grew up was, probably, the darkest age in Indian history. All vital limbs of society were paralyzed; religious institutions and schools, village, agriculture, law and administration, all were in a chaotic condition. Hinduism was based on corrupt beliefs, idolatry and priesthood. There was monopoly of "Zamindaars" over the poor farmers. The government fund for education was used for Sanskrit-teaching school. There were no provision women literacy but they had to suffer cruel customs like "Sati Pratha" and "polygamy". Very limited civilian rights had been provided to the Indian by the British government.

In 1809, Ram Mohan joined the service in the Revenue Department of the East India Company as an assistant to Mr. John Digby. Because of this English officer Ram Mohan was introduced to western culture and literature.

Due to his wide education and exposure to different cultures, he felt the need of all-round reconstitution and renovation for the continued existence of social life and order of the country. So, he left the company to devote his full time to activities of social reform.

He found that the national development was not possible by isolating Indians from the life of the West, but by healthy competition or co-operation with it. India could be enriched only by applying the treasures of western knowledge. He formed his ideology based on western values fascinated the sentiments of the people of India and developed the feeling of nationalism.

First of all he attempted to reform Hinduism. And so faced much opposition and ridicule from the orthodox sections of our country. But, finally he proved that he was not out to destroy the best traditions of the country, but was merely brushing away some of the impurities crept into it.

To rescue the Indian society from its superstitions and injustices, he favoured modern Western education for its scientific and inquiring spirit and broad ideas.

He was deeply distressed by the position of women in the society, so he campaigned for rights for women, including the right for widows to remarry and to hold property. He actively opposed Sati system and the practice of polygamy.

Roy advocated for equal civilian and economic rights to the British as well as Indian. He made the British Parliament agree to establish a free Indian press and consulting the views and opin-ions of Indian gentlemen before releasing any decision about India and Indian People.

To produce nationalism among the country people, he used the power of press and created powerful public opinion to support the development of India in all fields and to remove cruel customs by means of his writings and discussions in his journals.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy was different from conventional revolutionary who hatred British involvement in the transformation of India. He set up a great example before the world by saving the culture and civilization of India at the toughest time and so he will be remember always as a "prophet of coming Humanity".

Rabindranath Tagore's views on Nationalism

Today, we find two contradictory trends at work. One is the erasing of national boundaries and greater trans-national cooperation. The other trend is the chest-thumping that happens in the name of the 'nation'. Anyone who does not participate in actively showering praises on the nation is labeled as an anti-nationalist.
