Glucose ( simplest form of carbohydrates) is converted to a 3 Carbon compound (known as Pyruvic acid or Pyruvate) in the absence of oxygen and in the cytoplasm.

In aerobic respiration, in the presence of oxygen and in the mitochondria, this Pyruvate is converted into 6CO2 + 6H2O and 38 ATP.

Hope this helps
