Sonar works on the principle of reflection of sound. In SONAR a transmitter is present which transmits high frequency ultrasonic sound which is inaudible to human ear . This sound travels through the water or any medium on which the ship is traveling and hits the bed of any water body . Later after hitting the bed the sound reflects back and it travels towards the ship where at the bottom of the ship a receptor is present which catches the sound and analysis of the distance of the bed is done by knowing the speed of sound in that medium. Thus, by this process we can know the depth of the sea bed into which we are traveling.
For eg : if the speed of sound in that medium is 400 m/sthen if the sound returns in 10 seconds
then by formula distance = speed× time
therefore distance = 400× 10
distance =4000 m
this is the distance travelled by sound that is the twice the distance of the ship and sea bed
thus the distance will be half
so 4000/2
=2000 m = 2 km
this is the analysing process of SONAR

Sonar is the technique which is used to calculate the distance of sea shore it uses ultrasonic sound which is of more than 20000 Hz.
these ultrasonic waves are released from one part of a ship and the device named receiver receives the waves after striking to the sea shore. this receiver with the help of some machines calculates the distance and the exact distance is found
APPLICATIONS OF SONAR ARE AS FOLLOWS-
1.for various surveys in shallow water.eg.gives accurate measurement of stones in the sea.
2.And for search and rescue missions.e.g.when the target is detected with the help of sonar.we use it to guide the rescue diver hence its useful in searching
