The working principle of an alternator or AC generator is similar to the basic working principle of a DC generator.

The function of a split ring is to keep the torque on a DC motor from reversing every time the coil moves through the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field, a split-ring device called a commutator is used to reverse the current at that point.
The function of a carbon brush is to run electric current, contacting and sliding on the rotating commutator of the motor or the rotating slip ring of the generator. One is carbon brush for commutation of motors and the other is current collector for slip ring.
