an electric bell consists of wire wound on an iron piece. the coil act as an electromagnet when current passes through it . an iron string with hammer at one end is kept close to the electromagnet . there is a contact screw , the current flows through the coil and it acts as electromagnet. it pulls the strip . in the process , the hammer at the end of the strip strikes the gong of the bell and produce sound. when the electromagnet pulls the iron strip,the circuit breaks and the current stops flowing. the coil is no longer an electromagnet so the iron strip get back in contact with the screw. the process continue alternatively.
