The data flow diagram , abbreviated as DFD is defined as the graphical representation of the flow of data in any software system developed.

They are also sometime known as bubble charts since a number of bubble shaped elements are used for the diagrammatic representation.

Lets figure out some points on DFD:

The data flow diagram shows how information is input to and output from the system, in addition to the sources and destinations of that information, and where that information is stored.

It basically maps out the flow of information for any process or system.

It uses well-defined symbols like rectangles, circles and arrows, plus short text labels, to show data inputs, outputs, storage points and the routes between each destination.
