Explain the working of electric bell.​

The electric bell works on the principle of the electromagnet. Its construction is shown in the above figure.

Construction: It is made of an electromagnet, bell(metallic cup), soft iron strip(which works as a hammer) and contact screw. The bell is a cup-shaped device made of metal. A soft iron strip works as a small hammer.

Working: When current is passed through the circuit, the electromagnet acts like a magnet and attracts the iron strip. The iron strip(hammer), being elastic, strikes the bell. Simultaneously, its contact with the screw is broken, the circuit breaks and the current stops flowing through the electromagnet. As such, the iron strip returns to its original position, and again the current passes through the electromagnet.

This phenomenon happens many times in a second, and as the hammer strikes the bell, the sound is heard. The bell rings till the circuit has been switched off. The electric bell is used in alarms and bells is schools, offices, homes and industries.

Electric Bell

the electric bell is a simple household device based on the magnetic effect of current. it consists of a gong , an electromagnet ,a soft iron rod ( armature) and a contact screw all arranged in an electric circuit as shown in the given diagram here

when current flows through the Electromagnet it acquires magnesium and attract the armature

as the armature bends towards the electromagnet the gong is struck . but at the same time contact between armature and contact screw gets broken and the circuit get switch off

as the current flow stops due to the break in the circuit the electromagnet immediately loss its magnetism therefore no longer attract the armature

the armature gets pulled back to its original position by spring action it now again comes in contact with the contact screw the circuit gets completed again the cycle repeats itself and the gong get struck again this in turn again break the circuit

due to this alternate making and breaking of the circuit which take place very rapidly the electric bell goes on ringing continuously as long as the switch is kept pressed
