Fuse is an electrical protector ,which keeps electrical devices safe . It is a piece of wire made to limit excessive amount of current flowing through it, if high current is passed then this wire gets heated up & melts. If the wire melts , it opens the circuit. It also works as circuit breaker.

An electric circuit is used in order to prevent short circuit !!!
When excess of electric current is passed on through it then it overloads and the wire (which is usually made of an alloy having low melting point ) starts melting due to the heat produced in circuit and hence the circuit breaks!!......:)
