Explain the working of electric generator.
Answers
Solution:
The electric generator is a machine for producing electric current or electricity. The electric generator convert mechanical energy into electrical energy.
Principle of working of an electric generator:
Electric generator is an application of electromagnetic induction.
Electric generator works on the principle that when a straight conductor is moved in a magnetic field, then current is induced in the conductor
In an electric generator a rectangular coil is made to rotate rapidly in the magnetic field between the poles of a horseshoe type magnet. When the coil rotates it cut the magnetic field lines due to which current is produced in the coil .
Electric generators are of two types:
Alternating current generator(A.C generator)
Direct current generator (D.C generator)

Generator: It is a device which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. Mechanical energy may either be fuel or some other resource.
Working: It works on the principle of electromagnetic induction discovered by Michael Faraday. Generators are basically coils of electric conductors, normally copper wire, that are tightly wound onto a metal core and are mounted to turn around inside an exhibit of large magnets. An electric conductor moves through a magnetic field, the magnetism will interface with the electrons in the conductor to induce a flow of electrical current inside it.
The conductor coil and its core are called the armature, connecting the armature to the shaft of a mechanical power source, for example an motor, the copper conductor can turn at exceptionally increased speed over the magnetic field.
Types:
- AC Generators
- DC Generators
