Electric Motor :-

An electric motor is a rotating device that converts electrical energy to mechanical energy.

  • Principal :- It works on the fact that a current carrying coil placed in a magnetic field experiences a torque.

Working :- An electric motor consists of a rectangular coils ABCD of insulated copper wire. The coil is placed between the two poles of a magnetic field such that arm AB and arm CD are perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field. The ends of the coil are connected to the two halves P and Q of a split ring. When current flows in the coil. According to the Flemings left hand rule, the force on arm AB is downwards and on CD is upwards. These two forces rotates the coil anti-clockwise. After half rotation, the current in the coil reverses and gives the continuous rotation to the coil and to the axel.
