the apparatus in which electrolysis is carried out. the direct current is supplied by the battery or the power pack. graphite electrodes carry the current into and out of the cell. graphite is chosen because it is quite inert and is  not reactive. electrons flow from the negative terminal of the battery around the circuit and back to the positive terminal.
