SONAR stands for SOund Navigation And Ranging. This device uses ultrasonic waves to measure distance, direction and speed of underwater objects. It consists of transmitter and receiver. Transmitter produces ultra sonic waves and transmits ultrasonic waves towards seabeds after reflection of sound from the seabed. The reflected ultrasonic waves are collected by the receiver(detector).

Then, v = displacement/time

v= 2d/t

v×t = 2d

therefore, d = v×t/2
