There are various effects of ocean currents :
I) Formation of Deserts - Over a period of centuries, a desert is formed due to lack of rainfall, arid conditions & cold ocean currents. Cold ocean currents bring extreme aridity to a certain area. When the blow over land they soak up all the moisture that is present & can lead to land becoming barren.
ATACAMA DESERT in CHILE was formed duee to blowing of cold ocean currents.
II) Rainfall - While cold ocean currents can bring aridity, warm ocean currents bring rainfall. These ocean currents pick up moisture while blowing over oceans and rains on land. e.g. The Gulf Stream brings rainfall to Western Europe.
III) Temperature Management- Majority of the sun's radiation is stored by the oceans, And since water is a poorer conductor of heat than land, it prevents extremities during winter, especially around the tropical region. Also, evaporation allows rainfall or other form of precipitation to occur which also helps in stabilising the temperature.
