Explanation:

The idea of people forming large groups or factions to advocate for their shared interests is ancient. Plato mentions the political factions of Classical Athens in the Republic,[1] and Aristotle discusses the tendency of different types of government to produce factions in the Politics.[2] Certain ancient disputes were also factional, like the Nika riots between two chariot racing factions at the Hippodrome of Constantinople. However, modern political parties are considered to have emerged around the end of the 18th or early 19th centuries, appearing first in Europe and the United States.[3][4] What distinguishes political parties from factions and interest groups is that political parties use an explicit label to identify their members as having shared electoral and legislative goals.[4][5] The transformation from loose factions into organised modern political parties is considered to have first occurred in either the United Kingdom or the United States, with the United Kingdom's Conservative Party and the Democratic Party of the United States both frequently called the world's first modern political party.[6]

some of the functions includes ------

1     The main purpose of political parties is to join people who hold similar points of view about the government together. These groups work to participate in and influence the government by having its members elected to a government position. Even though many people choose to be associated with a certain party, they don't all share exactly the same beliefs. However, the core beliefs about how government should be run are shared.

2     The United States is a two-party system. Although there are minor parties, none have been able to gain the support needed to win a national election. In America, we have a two-party system where the Republicans and Democrats dominate the political scene. However, there is a growing trend in the United States for voters to be registered as independent. This group votes for different parties in each election. An independent may vote for a Republican for president and a Democrat for senator. The Republicans and Democrats work hard to understand this group of voters.

3     Parties must promote a broad set of core beliefs to reach their members as well as independent voters. Even those voters who choose to be affiliated with a certain party tend to choose candidates who hold a middle of the road view. For these reasons, parties tend to form their platform based on reaching those who hold a moderate viewpoint. This is beneficial to our country in many ways. Most importantly, it keeps our government from taking on an extreme point of view that would appeal only to a small portion of the population.

4     Political parties have many different functions. Their main job is to hold true to a core set of beliefs. This enables voters to understand the basic beliefs of a candidate who is registered with one of the main parties. Imagine having to choose among fifty candidates in a presidential election. Because the time involved for each citizen would be overwhelming, political parties also help to streamline the voting process for voters. In elections for a federal government office such as president, senator, or representative, the parties hold nominations to choose the candidate. This helps to reduce the number of candidates on the ballot. Voters are able to research the policies and beliefs of the candidates because the field has been narrowed through the nomination process.

5     Political parties also provide many support activities for their candidates. They hold fundraisers, distribute literature, and encourage people to register to vote. As an election draws nearer, they may perform polls and make phone calls to encourage voters to get out and vote. Each party helps to guide voters by advertising the party's belief on issues of importance. This helps voters to know which party best matches their individual beliefs.

6     By maintaining a broad set of beliefs, political parties help to keep our country from splitting into multiple parties. More competing groups would be detrimental to running the government efficiently. Our two-party system keeps power balanced in our government. It also helps to organize the government. Leadership in Congress is determined by political party affiliation. Congressional leaders and committee members receive appointments based on their party membership. The president determines executive branch appointments and usually follows party lines.

7     Political parties are also responsible for keeping an eye on each other and on the activities of the government. Parties out of power spend much of their time presenting an opposing view to the party in power. This helps to keep citizens informed of both sides of an issue. Although there tends to be a negative view of political parties because they spend so much time arguing, this actually helps to ensure the people remain informed about what is happening in their government. Even though voters get tired of negative campaigning and fighting, the information they receive helps them to make decisions at the polls.

8     Our two-party system is an important part of our free society. It is also one of the oldest party systems in the world. Although it is frustrating at times, it is likely to continue for many years to come.
