Jean Jacques Rousseau was a philosopher, writer and composer of 18th century. His political philosophy influenced the enlightenment in France and across Europe as well as aspects of the French Revolution and the overall development of modern political and educational thought. His teachings helped to lay the foundation of democracy. The teachings were :-

1. He believed that the government should based on the consent of the governed.

2. In his work 'Social Contract', he talks of a contract between the ruler and the ruled. Implied in his writings was the belief that the men had the right to change their government if they were not satisfied. This is one of the cardinal principals of democracy.

3. Rousseau's revolutionary ideas of democracy in the age of absolute monarchy not only paved the way for the French Revolution but encouraged people to fight for their rights and set up a government responsive to their needs.

4. He upheld the doctrine of popular sovereignty.

5. He believed in the existence of the natural and inalienable rights of life, liberty and in ideas of liberty, equality, fraternity that influenced the French Revolution and laid the foundation of democracy.
