SONAR ( sound navigation and ranging) employs ultrasonic waves for its working. powerful pulses of ultrasound are sound waves are sent out at regular intervals of time from a transmitter mounted on a ship. these ultrasonic waves get intersepted by an object or sea bottom and get reflected.these reflected waves are detected by detector on the ship. the time interval between transmission and detection is recorded and the object's is detected.
