Air exerts pressure because it is matter and occupies space and has mass. Since air is a mixture of different molecules they are pushed together causing pressure with each other. Vacuum cleaners work by means of air pressure.

air exerts pressure on tje walls of its container....this can be best understood by blowing a balloon. when air is filled in it the air exerts pressure on the balloons wall and thus expands it as it is made up of rubber.
