  • Mirage is caused due to TIR(Total internal reflection).
  • On a hot day in desert as the Earth surface is hot hence the air closer to surface would be rarer compared to the upper air.
  • So when a light ray travels from upper air to the air closer to surface it travels from denser to rarer medium. So TIR takes place.
  • Due to mirage  on a hot day when we are travelling on a highway, the distant patch of road appears to be wet but it not.
  • Google Mirage TIR for images.(for better understanding)
