Transfer of charge is the naturally occurring phenomenon where two charged bodies take part in a shifting of charge. This is done to neutralize, or rather equalize the charges on both sides.

The process is analogous to the situation in which two beakers filled with water upto unequal levels are connected and water flows till the level of water in both beakers is the same. Theoretically. This is found not to happen so precisely in practice. But, getting back to point, a potential difference is created between the two terminals due to presence of unequal charges. This forces the charge to equalize, that is flow from the area of abundancy to the area of scarcity. Generally, this flow is found to be from the positive terminal to the negative one. Just like water flows from the excessively filled beaker to the less-filled one.
