Transitional metals posses the ability to form complex compounds. In the formation of complex compounds, coordination bond is formed by the exchange of electro pair. In the formation of complex compounds transitional metal ions act as accept or of electron pair and NH3,H2O, Cl, F, Cyanide, etc., act as ligands donating the electron pair and forming coordination bond.
Tendency to form complex compounds is due to following reasons:
1.They contain vacant (n-1)d and np orbitals.
2.They posses high nuclear charge and small size.
