There are bunch of xylem cells that helps in the transportation of water from cell to cell.

Water from the roots is transported through the xylem cells and tissues to the other parts of the plants.

Consequently, in a potato activity as well, it is observed that water flows from one end to another itself.

The transportation process of water which occurs from cell to cell in a potato  with an activity is when there are group of xylem cells which transmit water from one cell to another.

Explanation:

  • Xylem cells and tissues involves in transportation of water in the plants starting from the roots to each and every part of plant.
  • In a similar way, water transportation process occurs in a potato. It is observed that water flows from one end to another reaching out to every portion of the plant system.

Activity- i. One can take a large potato, peel off its outer skin and cut through and make the base flat.

  • ii. Then, make a deep and hollow cavity on the opposite side of potato.
  • iii. Half of the cavity should be filled with sugar solution and mark on potato wall the level by inserting a pin.
  • iv. Put the potato into a dish filled with a small amount of water. Then, Remark the water level is not above the level of the pin.
  • v. Let the apparatus settle down for few hours.
  • vi. Observe an increase in the level of sugar solution. The reason behind it is the very short distances water can transfer from one cell to another.
  • vii. In this, water reaches through xylem vessels from the root of the soil in upwards direction to other parts.
