The Caribbean colonies such as Martinique, Guadeloupe and San Domingo, were flourishing with tobacco, indigo, sugar and coffee plantations. But Europeans were reluctant to go and work in unknown faraway lands.
This lead to a triangular slave trade between north america, France and Africa to make up for the lack of labour on the islands.
French Merchants sailed from the ports of Nantes and Bordeaux in France to Africa where they bought slaves from the local chieftans.
These slaves embarked on a three month long journey across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean to work in plantations.
