A nuclear fusion reaction in which threehelium nuclei (alpha particles) fuse to forma carbon nucleus, thereby releasing energy. Two helium nuclei fuse to form an unstableisotope of beryllium, which underconditions of sufficient temperature andpressure fuses with a third helium nucleusto form carbon before it decays. Triplealpha processes take place in stars inwhich large quantities of helium haveaccumulated as the product of proton-proton chain and carbon cycle reactions.
