When a boat man pushes the bank of the river with a pole in backwards direction the bank offers an equal and opposite reaction which makes the boat move in forwards direction.

It becomes difficult to walk on a sandy beach because when we push the sand backwards with our feet the sand moves, thus it doesnt react back with the same force
