Ans.(I) Meaning of communalism: The feeling of love towards our own religion and hate for other religions is called communalism.
(II) Communalism can take various forms:
(a) Evert day beliefs: The most common expression of communalism is in everyday beliefs. These involve religious prejudices, stereotypes of religious communities and belief of religious superiority over others.
(b) Quest for political dominance: A communal mind often leads to a quest for po9litical dominance of one’s won religious community. For majority, it takes the form of majoritarianism. For minority, it can take the form of a desire to make a separate political unit.
(c) Political mobilisation of masses: Political mobilisation on religious lines is another frequent form
of communalism. It involves the use of holy symbols, religious leaders, emotional appeal and plain fear to bring the followers one religion together in the political arena.
(d) Communal riots and violence: Sometimes communalism take its most ugly form of communal violence, riots and massacre. India and Pakistan had witnessed the worst communal riots at the time of partition.
