Tropic movements. When a plant shows some growth movement in response to a stimulus, it is known as tropism. Tropism is a direction, which is specific and depends on the direction of the stimulus. Plants may either show a positive or negativemovement as a response to a stimulus.

The directional growth movements of plant due to external stimuli are called tropic movement. It can be either towards the stimulus, or away from it. For example, in case of phototropic movement, shoots respond by bending towards light while roots respond by bending away from it.
