According to the Hindu scriptures, Uttarayan is the period when Sun travels from South to North which is also known as Makar Sankranti. Out of six seasons, three falls in this solstice that is winter, spring and summer.

FOLLOWING THE WINTER SOLSTICE,THE SUN SETS ITS NORTHWARD APPARENT MOVEMENT FROM TROPIC OF CANCER AND IT CULMINATES ON TROPIC OF CAPRICORNON 21 JUNE.THIS NORTHWARD APPARENT MOVEMENT OF THE SUN IS KNOWN AS UTHARAYANAM.
