The valence bond theory explains the basic theory of chemical bonding i.e. the formation of the covalent bond between the atoms with the help of quantum mechanics.

  • According to Linus Pauling, a covalent bond formation takes place between two atoms by overlapping of their half-filled valence orbitals.

Each of the valence orbitals contains one unpaired electron.

  • There are two types of overlapping orbitals:  sigma (σ) and pi (π) orbitals.

Single bonds:  one sigma bond

Double bonds: one sigma bond and one pi bond

Triple bonds: one sigma bond and two pi bonds.

Orbital hybridization: When bonding orbitals possess or share various characteristics of different types of orbitals.
