Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is the initiative of a corporate organization to assess and to take responsibility for its company's effects on the environmental and social well-being.
Although it has become mandatory to integrate CSR into corporates, they are many issues due to this. a few issues are -
1. Non-coordination of corporate departments leading to acting of CSR in the periphery of the corporation without deeper integration.
2. Needs a social license for operation, which usually favors only the successful and big-shot companies.
3. Change in the expectations from and about the human rights.
There are a few companies in India which follow the CSR protocol, like the TATA group, the Aditya Birla group, the ITC group, the Indian Oil Corporation, Bharath Petroleum, Hindustan Unilever, Maruti Suzuki India, GlaxoSmithKline, SAP India, and Reliance India.
Reliance India is aiming and working positively to transform rural societies with better healthcare, Environment, education, Protection of National Art, Preservation of National Heritage and Culture, and also, Disaster Response.
The CSR program of GlaxoSmithKline focuses primarily on the health and healthy living in the tribal villages. They provide medical check-ups and treatment, organize health camps, various health awareness programs, etc. apart from providing money, basic medicines, and basic equipment to NGOs that are working towards improving the health and educational situations in the under-served communities.
