There are many ways in which materials can be distinguished. some of them are as follows:

1) Appearance:  The simplest way to distinguish between materials can be by their appearance. we can simply tell if a material is solid, liquid, or gas just by looking at it.

2) Touch: The second method can be feeling or touching the material, by this we can distinguish features like whether it is soft or hard and what is the temperature of the material.

For example, an iron rod when touched would be felt hard while cotton would be soft.

3) Properties: For further classification, we need to check its properties like how strong the material is, what are the effects of temperature and stress variations. Other properties to be checked can be electrical and magnetic conduction, melting point, tension, etc.

For example, plastics and ceramic materials are brittle while metals are ductile.
